While plastic food containers may be inexpensive, lightweight and durable, most of them contain BPA, a type of plastic that can disrupt your hormones.
Alternatives like glass and ceramic are a safer option if you’re trying to heal your hormones, and they can be better for microwaving and storing hot foods.
What is BPA?
BPA (Bisphenol A) is a compound used to produce lightweight, durable, and heat-resistant plastics called polycarbonate plastics.
Because of their properties, polycarbonate plastics are commonly used in food applications, where you can find them in products like water bottles, reusable containers, and the linings of metal food cans.
While the FDA approved the use of BPA in food applications, studies show that small amounts can leach into food stored in these plastics.
How BPA affects your hormones
BPA is a known endocrine disruptor, meaning it can cause problems with your hormone balance. It does this by mimicking the way estrogen works in your body.
Over time, exposure to BPA can potentially contribute to a variety of issues. These include things like metabolic problems, changes in your menstrual cycle, endometriosis, and fertility issues.
Things that cause BPA plastics to break down, like repeated use or using them in the microwave or dishwasher can increase your exposure.
Safer food storage alternatives
Even though food storage containers made with BPA are durable and can last a long time, there are safer options that provide many of the same benefits.
Glass, porcelain, and stainless steel containers don’t contain harmful chemicals that may interfere with your hormones, and you can also use them in the dishwasher or with hot foods. Some glass and porcelain containers are also microwave-safe.
When it’s time to trade in your old food storage containers for safer options, look for products labeled “BPA-free”.
